(HealthDayNews) -- Before you buy those toy fire engines or dress-up dolls this year, make sure the products are safe for children, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises.
The agency offers these suggestions:
- Select toys to suit the age, abilities, skills and interest level of the child. Toys that are too advanced could pose safety hazards to younger children.
- For infants, toddlers and children who still like to place objects in their mouth, avoid toys with small parts that could pose a fatal choking hazard.
- For all children under age 8, avoid toys that have sharp edges and points.
- Do not buy toys with electric heating elements for children under age 8.
- Check to make sure the toy is well constructed.
- Once the toy is opened, discard its plastic wrap immediately to avoid suffocation.
