HHS AWARDS OVER $1.2M TO FOUR WISCONSIN GROUPS
Funds will assist resettlement of Hmong refugees

HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson today announced the awarding of $1,200,805 to four Wisconsin groups to assist in the resettlement of Hmong refugees. HHS’s Assistant Secretary for Children and Families Wade F. Horn, Ph.D., made the announcement on behalf of Secretary Thompson and President George W. Bush at a special ceremony today in Milwaukee.

“I thank the people of Wisconsin for welcoming Hmong refugees to their new home,” Secretary Thompson said. “These grants will help provide valuable services to assist in their resettlement.”

The awards, which cover a seventeen month period, include:

  • $217,135 to Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee;
  • $178,170 to Catholic Charities of the Diocese of La Crosse;
  • $675,500 to the State of Wisconsin’s Department of Workforce Development; and
  • $130,000 to United Refugee Services of Wisconsin in Madison.

“The Hmong have stood for freedom under difficult circumstances,” Dr. Horn said. “The Bush Administration today extends our thanks to these brave men, women and children as we award these grants to help the Hmong become part of Wisconsin.”

The awards are for the Unanticipated Arrivals program and will provide services including intensive case management, counseling and job-related training to address basic rsettlement needs.
