LEGAL PERMANENT RESIDENT SERVICES

Abandoning Legal Permanent Resident Status

Many immigrants to the U.S. decide to return abroad to reside. If you are a legal permanent resident and have remained abroad for more than 12 months without a Re-Entry Permit, it is quite possible that your LPR status has lapsed. If you wish to return to the U.S. as an immigrant, please visit our Returning Resident Visas page . If you intend to travel to the U.S. as a non-immigrant, you may wish to file an I-407, Abandonment of Lawful Permanent Resident Status, in order to clarify you status. The Nonimmigrant Visa Units in Japan usually require former LPRs to execute this document and surrender the I-551 (green card) before issuing a nonimmigrant visa.

You may come in to the IV section in Tokyo between 8:30 and 12:00 Monday - Friday or Naha, 8:30-11:00 Monday - Thursday to complete this process. No appointment required.
