HHS AWARDS GRANTS TO EZ/EC COMMUNITIES

HHS Secretary Donna E. Shalala announced today the Department of Health and Human Services' intent to provide additional funding to urban and rural areas of the country, previously designated by President Clinton as Empowerment Zones and Enterprise Communities (EZ/EC). The announcement was made at Vice President Gore's White House Community Empowerment Conference.

"We are committed to assisting these communities meet their pressing needs," Secretary Shalala said, "and to creating a new national model -- a new standard -- for local-federal collaboration."

Using funding available from the Office of Community Services' Urban and Rural Economic Development Discretionary Program, HHS plans to make awards ranging from $250,000 to $700,000 to ten community-based corporations for programs such as job placement and training, business development and incubation and building
renovation. The projects were chosen from 167 competitors and are part of the Administration's commitment to giving special consideration to projects located in EZ/EC neighborhoods.

"This additional funding will provide more tools and flexibility to EZ/EC communities," said Mary Jo Bane, assistant secretary for children and families. "Creating jobs, attracting private partnerships and training residents for new job opportunities will promote economic self-sufficiency."
