HHS Secretary Donna E. Shalala announced today the Department of Health and Human Services' intent to provide additional funding to urban and rural areas of the country, previously designated by President Clinton as Empowerment Zones and Enterprise Communities (EZ/EC). The announcement was made at Vice President Gore's White House Community Empowerment Conference. "We are committed to assisting these communities meet their pressing needs," Secretary Shalala said, "and to creating a new national model -- a new standard -- for local-federal collaboration." Using funding available from the Office
of Community Services' Urban and Rural Economic Development Discretionary
Program, HHS plans to make awards ranging from $250,000 to $700,000
to ten community-based corporations for programs such as job placement
and training, business development and incubation and building "This additional funding will provide more tools and flexibility to EZ/EC communities," said Mary Jo Bane, assistant secretary for children and families. "Creating jobs, attracting private partnerships and training residents for new job opportunities will promote economic self-sufficiency." The prospective grantees are: Women Entrepreneurs of Baltimore, Inc. South Boston Community Housing, Inc. Bethel New Life, Inc. West Side Planning and Development Corporation Greater North Pulaski Development Corporation The Pyramid CDC The East Los Angeles Community Union
