The Faith-Based and Community Initiative (FBCI)

History

On January 29, 2001, President Bush signed an Executive Order establishing a White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives (White House OFBCI) to lead the Federal Government's effort to leverage the work of faith-based and other community organizations in providing services to communities.

Ongoing Region 10 Activities

In Region 10, our staff:

  • Promote collaboration between faith-based, community and state organizations to improve program awareness of potential contributions of faith-based and community organizations
  • Publicize ACF funding opportunities for faith-based and community organizations
  • Include speakers and attendees from faith-based and community organizations in regional meetings/conferences
  • Participate in conferences oriented to the involvement of faith-based and community organizations in social services delivery
  • Coordinate with the TANF Team on "Charitable Choice" issues that arise as a result of the 1996 Welfare Reform legislation
  • Consult regarding the Compassion Capital Fund resources
  • Maintain of a database of faith-based and community organizational contacts
  • Maintain a mailing list of persons interested in receiving announcements related to FBCI

Past Region 10 Activities

  • Co-sponsored Idaho faith and community-based conference in partnership with the Department of Housing and Urban Development in January, 2003
  • Co-sponsored proposal writing seminar with the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration in March, 2003
  • Assisted with outreach efforts to promote FBO/CBO participation in the Office of Community Services "Connecting the Community" event in San Francisco, CA, in March, 2003
  • Collaboration with faith-based groups at the state and local levels to assess interest and opportunities working to promote Community Marriage Initiatives in all four Regional States. Partnerships are now in place in Nampa, ID; Yakima, WA; and Tacoma, WA.
  • Collaboration with federal partners in planning for Regional faith and community-based conference in Vancouver, WA, on May 6, 2003.
