Administration for Native Americans

Dear Honorable Tribal Leaders

In December 2003, the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) held its first National Native American Conference in Phoenix, Arizona. This two-day event began with the ACF Tribal Consultation Session that was held in partnership with the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI).

On behalf of ACF, I would like to extend my appreciation to all participants for making the 2003 Consultation a success. Both ACF leadership and tribal representatives provided noteworthy dialogue and discussion that will help us as we continue to review and improve our programs serving Native communities. Tribal representation and participation in Consultation is invaluable as ACF considers budget and policy development and implementation. This forum of exchange is truly vital in understanding and meeting the needs and issues affecting Native communities.

An executive summary of the 2003 Consultation has been posted on the ACF website at www.acf.hhs.gov for your review. The 2004 ACF Tribal Consultation session has been scheduled for Monday, September 20 in Washington , DC . I look forward to your participation and another successful dialogue.

Sincerely,

Dr. Wade F. Horn

Assistant Secretary for Children and Families
