The Fiscal Year 2004 (FY04) Child Care Research Scholar Program
funds grants to support graduate students who are conducting dissertation
research on child care issues that are consistent with the Child
Care Bureau's Research Agenda. These grants are funded under the
authority of the Child Care and Development Block Grant Act of 1990,
as amended, and are subject to annual appropriation by Congress.
The purpose of this grant program is to help develop a national infrastructure for high quality child care research by increasing the numbers of upcoming researchers who are conducting child care research. There are three goals for the program area: (1) to foster formal mentoring relationships between faculty members and graduate students who are pursuing research in the child care field; (2) to support students’ graduate training and professional development as researchers engaged in policy-relevant research; and (3) to encourage active communication, networking, and collaboration among graduate students, their mentors, other child care researchers, and policymakers.
In FY 2004, CCB awarded $146,844 in grants to support five new Child Care Research Scholars. The awards range from $27,853 to $30,000. Grantees will examine issues of how community factors and information campaigns affect parents’ accessibility and use of quality care; how child care disruptions affect mothers’ employment; the use of technology to train license-exempt care providers; and how children’s care arrangements influence their school readiness. Projects are funded for a 12-month budget period, with the possibility of an additional year pending program approval of non-competitive continuation requests.
