  • (HealthDayNews) -- Snake bites are a common hazard for people who hunt, hike or otherwise spend a lot of time outdoors in certain areas.

If you're bitten by a snake, follow these tips from the Mayo Clinic:

    • Seek medical attention immediately, especially if the bite changes color, begins to swell or is painful.
    • Don't try to capture the snake.
    • Immobilize the bitten arm or leg and try to stay as quiet as possible.
    • Remove jewelry, as swelling tends to progress rapidly.
    • Don't cut the wound or try to remove the venom.
    • Don't use a tourniquet or apply ice.
