Fisherman in Inland BaysCenter for the Inland Bays receives EPA grant to fight water pollution (10/29/04) EPA awarded $506,984 to the Center for the Inland Bays in Lewes, Del. to reduce and prevent water pollution in the inland bays estuary, which includes Rehoboth, Indian River and Little Assawoman bays. The grant was matched with $505,000 grant from the state. The Center is funding 10 research projects this year, including projects to study the exact causes of algae blooms and how they can be prevented. Other projects monitor the viability of the bays to reestablish and maintain fisheries such as shellfish. more...

Children using inhalersGrant will help Kingwood, W.Va. students manage asthma triggers (10/26/04) EPA Regional Administrator Donald S. Welsh presented a $7,000 grant to West Virginia University and the American Lung Association of West Virginia to help 70 elementary school students who suffer from asthma breathe easier."Asthma management is a major health care problem in rural West Virginia," said Welsh. "One way to address this problem is to improve patients' self-care skills so they can manage their own asthma condition. This grant is an excellent beginning." more..


EPA gives award to Amherst County, Va. watershed protection program to protect its source of drinking water (10/25/04)

EPA cites Sheetz, Inc. for underground fuel tank violations in Winchester, Va. (10/21/04) EPA cited the corporate owner of two convenience and gas stores in Winchester, Va., for violating federal and state regulations designed to prevent fuel leaks from underground storage tanks. EPA seeks a $32,530 penalty for these alleged violations, and has ordered the company to immediately comply with applicable underground storage tank regulations. more...

Clean School Bus LogoBack to school tips "School buses in your community and across the country travel a lot of miles. And that can mean a lot of air pollution," says Regional Administrator Donald S. Welsh, who offers seasonal tips to school officials and families. The Clean School Bus USA program protects the quality of the air by using new technology to make exhaust from school buses much cleaner and also by eliminating unnecessary idling.

EPA's Air Quality Index now includes fine particle pollution
Residents in 36 U.S. cities – including Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Washington, DC– can check EPA's Air Quality Index year-round to find out the daily levels of particle pollution at EPA's AirNow website.

Agencies release draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to improve coal mining environmental protection EPA and four other federal and state agencies released for public comment a draft EIS recommending several new cooperative actions to enhance environmental protection for Appalachian streams from effects associated with mountaintop coal mining. The report evaluates a broad range of federal and state actions proposed to reduce stream impacts, and to clarify responsibilities among agencies to improve compliance with the Clean Water Act and the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act.

EPA-approved State Implementation Plan (SIP) regulations for Region 3 state and local air quality agencies. A SIP is a plan for each state which identifies how the state will meet the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) and certain other requirements of the Clean Air Act.
