Biography of Kevin Keane

Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

Kevin Keane was sworn in as the Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on July 30, 2001.

Keane is the principal public affairs advisor to the Secretary. He participates in major decision-making affecting HHS policy and programs and manages the department-wide public affairs program. He also administers the department's Freedom of Information Act and Privacy Act.

Prior to joining HHS, Keane served as then-Governor Tommy G. Thompson's director of communications and executive assistant. In these roles, Keane was a senior advisor to the Governor on all matters, main spokesperson, and the liaison between the governor and the Cabinet, legislature, interest groups, media and the public.

From 1992-1994, Keane was the Washington correspondent for Thomson Newspapers, providing coverage of the White House, Congress and federal agencies, including coverage of the 1992 presidential campaign. Keane also managed several reporters as assistant city editor at the Waukesha Freeman newspaper, and reported for the Fond du Lac Reporter newspaper.

Keane was named outstanding journalism graduate at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1987. He was also awarded the Paul Miller Fellowship by the Freedom Forum for his work as a journalist in Washington, DC.
