Passport Services

The ACS Unit issues U.S. passports, provides additional passport pages, and amends or extends passports as applicable.

Full-validity passports: As of April 8, 2002, all full-validity U.S. passports must be produced in the United States by a domestic passport facility so that they may incorporate photo-digitized images and other enhanced security features. Applicants must wait approximately one week from the day that they drop off the application form at the Embassy until the day that they can pick up the passport. Applicants can also have the new passport delivered by Domesa. This service takes about two weeks after the application form is dropped off.

Requirements to obtain a U.S. passport

  • Your most recent U.S. passport. If you do not have a U.S. passport, you must provide proof of U.S. citizenship and valid photo identification. Examples of proof of citizenship include birth or naturalization certificates. Drivers' licenses, social security cards, or voter registration cards do not constitute proof of citizenship.

  • Three passport photographs. The photographs must be 2" x 2" (5cm x5cm), without white edges, with a front view of the face from 1" to 1 3/8" (2.3cm to 3.3cm) and a distance of ½" from the top of the head to the top of the photograph's border. The background must be white or very light. Polaroid, digital or similar "instant" film cannot be used.

  • Note concerning lost or stolen passports: A replacement passport can be issued if you lose your passport, upon presentation of proof of identity and of U.S. citizenship. If you believe your passport has been stolen, first report the theft to the local police and obtain a police report.

  • Notes concerning child applicants:

    • If the child has changed a great deal since the last passport photo was taken, please bring another, more recent form of photo identification. If such ID is unavailable, please bring photos of the child through the years, demonstrating the aging of the child.

    • Children must appear in person, accompanied by a parent.

    • Passport applicants under the age of 14 should be accompanied by both parents. The parents should submit their ID and an original birth certificate to prove parentage.

      • If only one parent appears, he/she should submit a written consent form from the other parent for passport application and issuance. In that case, a copy of the ID of the absent parent should also be submitted.

      • If only one of the parents or a third party has legal custody of the minor, he/she should apply for the passport and submit the original official document which names him/her as legal guardian.

      • If one parent is deceased, the applicant parent must present a copy of the death certificate.
