Program and Policy Internship

Job: Program and Policy Intern

Time commitment: 10 to 40 hours per week
Duration: 3 to 6 months
Compensation: Unpaid

Description:

Join a dynamic team within the US Department of Health and Human Services and help shape and implement cutting-edge policy for faith-based and community social service and health organizations across the country.

The Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives is looking for a self-starter to work independently and on teams on projects related to the Center's mission, which is to identify and overcome barriers to the full participation of faith-based and community organizations in HHS programs.

Possible projects include the following:

  • Develop a database to track participation of faith-based and community groups in HHS programs.
  • Manage information to be posted on the Center's website.
  • Write informational materials about the Center's activities and mission.
  • Help with projects related to policy and legal issues.

Opportunities include:

  • A unique view of policy from inside the Executive Branch of government, including the opportunity to interact with White House staff.
  • Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
  • An excellent opportunity to work with and learn about a variety of agencies within the large and diverse HHS organization, including the Administration for Children and Families (ACF), the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and many others.
  • An excellent experience to learn skills in administration and policy from a talented group of public service employees and political appointees.

Requirements:

We are looking for a college or graduate student, who is interested in public policy and eager to contribute to a team environment to further social service and public health goals. The intern should have strong computer, writing, and other communication skills, and have a flexible and positive attitude. An interest in the administration's Faith-Based and Community Initiative is also desirable but not required.

Health Programming and Policy Internship

The Office of Faith-based and Community Initiatives is looking for a qualified candidate for a four-to-six month rotation starting in August 2004 or soon after. The candidate will work on domestic and international health programming and policy issues.

Report to:
Kimberly Konkel (PMI 2000)
Associate Director for Health

Title of Assignment:
Special Assistant to the Associate Director

Duration of the Rotation: Negotiable (3- 6 months preferred but, longer is possible)

  • Coordinating a comprehensive departmental effort to incorporate faith-based and other community organizations in health programs and initiatives to the greatest extent possible;

  • Proposing the development of programs to increase the participation of faith-based and other community organizations in health promotion and service provision;

  • Developing and coordinating departmental outreach efforts to disseminate health and funding information more effectively to faith-based and other community organizations on initiatives and opportunities; and

  • Establishing opportunities for creating partnerships between FBO's (i.e. ‘ twinning')

Assignment Objective:

To effectively assist the CFBCI in accomplishing the President's Executive Orders and reach our agreed to tasks in the CFBCI OMB management agreement. By assisting the associate director the incumbent's role will be to strengthen the relationship between faith-based organizations and health providers. This includes encouraging and developing technical assistance so that faith-based and communityorganizations can participate in health promotion and disease prevention activities. The Associate Director spends much of her time on: international and domestic HIV/AIDS, obesity, global health, primary care delivery, organ donation, rural health, and disease prevention.

Description of Tasks:

  • Assist in program development and implementation
  • Assist in the development of evaluation plans for programs and the effectiveness of our office
  • Data collection
  • review grant announcements
  • Other various tasks as assigned by the associate director

Special Requirements and Selection Criteria:

  • Experience or education in public health and policy
  • Proficiency in SPSS, excel, and access
  • Good editing skills
  • Must be self starting and able to work with little management. Also must be able to accept relatively undefined tasks and bring them to completion, working both independently and in groups.
