This fact sheet is a "gateway" to the many possible paths to building a family through adoption. It attempts to provide an understanding of the basic steps in any adoption process and a guide to resources at each step. A list of additional resources is provided about general adoption, domestic adoption, foster care adoption, intercountry adoption, kinship adoption, and special circumstances adoption.

AdoptUSKids
The Children's Bureau contracted with the Adoption Exchange Association and its partners (the Collaboration to AdoptUSKids) to devise and implement a national adoptive family recruitment and retention strategy, operate the AdoptUSKids.org website, enhance adoptive family support organizations, and conduct a variety of adoption research projects.

How to Assess the Reputation of Licensed, Private Adoption Agencies

Because there are more than 1,700 licensed private agencies in the United States (with more than 700 listed as having intercountry adoption programs), it is difficult for the Clearinghouse to stay up-to-date on the operations of all agencies. Prospective adoptive parents should research the background of an agency before beginning the adoption process. The steps provided in this fact sheet will help prospective adoptive parents assess the reputation of licensed, private adoption agencies.
