OPM Workforce Planning

ADDRESSING TOMORROW'S ISSUES TODAY

Within the next few years, the first wave of baby-boomers will be reaching the retirement age. In fact, 30% of the Federal workforce will be eligible to retire in five years and an additional 20% could seek early retirement. However, that does not mean that 50% of the workforce will leave at once. But it does mean that agencies must start planning for the workforce of the future.

We know how important it is for agencies to begin their workforce planning efforts now. Therefore, we have designed a Workforce Planning Model for the Federal Government. Our goal is to ensure that Federal agencies have the information and tools necessary to devise successful workforce plans. As promised at our September 7, 2000 Workforce Planning Conference, we have developed this workforce planning website to provide up-to-date information on this vital issue.
