Quick ‘N Easy Application Guide

Application Timeline
Click here to learn about the NIH loan repayment programs in audio, video, or text-captioned format Generally, the Extramural online application process for loan repayment opens September and closes December. (Please check the News and Announcements for information on the specific application deadline. Click Here). Applications are then reviewed by peer review groups comprised of non-NIH scientists and funded applicants are notified by e-mail. Once notified of funding, applicants are asked to provide further documentation, including a promissory note and current account statement for each loan. Awards will be announced six to eight months after the deadline.

The 4 Steps to LRP Funding
The application must be completed on line (and a few documents must be faxed) before the closing date of the application cycle. Please see "News & Announcements" on the LRP Homepage for current opening and closing dates.

To get started, go on line to www.lrp.nih.gov and click on the “Apply Here” link. Enter the information requested and you will get a login and password by e-mail. To access the private application area, click on “Log In,” enter the information, and submit. After selecting the program and completing Page 2 of 2, the system displays the “Private Application Area.”

All online forms are separated into the following tabbed sections:

Step 1 – Personal Information
This includes contact and educational background about the applicant; funding sources information; a personal statement about career goals, certifications (required signatures); and verification of citizenship status.

Step 2 – Research
This step includes identification of your research supervisor, if applicable, and a description of your proposed research, your list of colleagues who will recommend you, and the institutional official who can provide salary information and confirm your institutional support. As each form is submitted NIH sends e-mail requests to either the research supervisor, recommender, or institutional contacts and they are asked to respond on line.

Step 3 – Loans
This section is where you tell us about your student loans. Complete as many loan information forms as needed. Click here to see what loans qualify.

Step 4 – Submit Application
When all online forms are completed, you must press the “submit” button. Application submission is a distinct and necessary step after all forms are submitted. You can print and save your own electronic or paper copy.

Our coach in the Office of Loan Repayment offers some tips:

  • Complete and submit each form as you finish it.
  • Don’t wait until the last minute to submit Step 2 forms! You have four months to complete your application so don’t squeeze your mentor or institutional contact for time. Get your forms completed swiftly and leave your colleagues several weeks to submit their best responses on your behalf.
  • Call the LRP Help Line at 866- 849-4047 with your questions, problems, or suggestions.
  • The application deadline is firm.
