Upcoming Changes at www.state.gov

The U.S. Department of State is undertaking a major revamp of its web site at www.state.gov, to improve usability and management of the large number of documents released to the public. An important resource for the American public, journalists, academia, and the foreign affairs community with some 1 million hits per week, www.state.gov continues to grow and evolve along with current technologies.

Based on usability studies and analysis of public and Department feedback, the Bureau of Public Affairs will organize the information on the homepage in a more user-friendly format. The site will contain nine sections: About the State Department; Press and Public Affairs; Travel and Living Abroad; Business Center; Other Services; Countries and Regions; International Topics and Issues; History, Education and Culture; Employment. The new homepage, which will be at http://state.gov, will feature a central "Highlights" section for current issues and services as well as a link to "Material Released Today," which will be generated by the database for all documents released through the Bureau of Public Affairs.

The current web site will remain intact as a permanent electronic archive of electronic material released by the State Department prior to January 19, 2001 under the Clinton Administration. Selected information dating back to the early 1990s, as well as an archive of the former Arms Control and Disarmament Agency web site (http://dosfan.lib.uic.edu/acda/index.html), is maintained under a partnership with the federal depository library at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the U.S. Government Printing Office.

As the web site transitions from the old static site to the new database-driven site, all material released under the Bush Administration will be entered into the database and appear within standard basic web page structure for bureaus/offices. The current structure of the bureau/office web pages will be revised as needed and phased into the new site over the next few months.
