From the NWHIC Project Director

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
Office on Women's Health (OWH)

"Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant."

~Robert Louis Stevenson

September is the start of the fall harvest season when a subtle chill begins to fill the air and the season change prepares us for the winter to come. September leaves us with enough evening light for a jog around the neighborhood after work, and it’s the perfect temperature for a game of tag football. In celebrating National Women’s Health and Fitness Day on September 24th and Family Health and Fitness Day on September 27th, you’ll want to squeeze in some extra time for physical activities you can do with your friends and family.

This month we recognize ovarian cancer and gynecologic cancer awareness month in an effort to spread the word about prevention, early detection, and available treatments. Our featured health article focuses on gynecologic cancers in women and answers questions we often get from visitors of our NWHIC website.

The national breastfeeding campaign, “Babies Were Born to be Breastfed” has brought more and more attention to our national call center—where breastfeeding peer Counselors are available to answer your calls. Some of the questions we answer are similar to the ones our guest editor, Anne Smith, an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, addresses in her article this month. If you or someone you know is struggling with breastfeeding or has basic breastfeeding questions, let them know that there is help available—and the best part is it’s only a phone call away!

September is a month filled with the anticipation of our children starting a new grade in school, the onset of autumn, and spiced apple cider. Reap the benefits of what autumn has to offer. Don’t let this month slip through your fingers without doing something for yourself, and your health!

Guest Editor Feature for September 2004:

During pregnancy, most mothers agonize over diet, exercise, and weight gain. Often times, these are the same issues that breastfeeding mothers have to deal with as they take on the task of being the only source of nutrients for their babies. In Anne Smith’s article “Nutrition, Exercise and Weight Loss While Breastfeeding,” these issues are addressed and some light is shed on the topic of breastfeeding.
