Basic Search - Series/Uniform Title
Search for SERIES TITLES that individual issues
have in common. For example,

conservation review series.
Other examples of series titles include:
- Time-Life student library
- Virago modern classics
- Kieler historische Studien
Search for UNIFORM TITLES that bring together
the many manifestations (editions, translations, etc.) of anonymous
works. For example, Beowulf,
Chanson de Roland, and Gilgamesh.
... or UNIFORM TITLES supplied in the catalog
that brings together similar works. The best example is the Bible
and its many parts:

- Bible. N.T. Corinthians, 1st
- Bible. N.T. Corinthians, 2nd
- Bible. N.T. Ephesians ...

References and Scope Notes:
In search results, some retrieved headings will not link directly
to catalog records, but will supply the user with links to related
headings or scope notes (marked with the icon) as illustrated in the
screen below.
Search Tips:
- Always omit initial articles (a, an, the, das, el, la, etc.)
in any language.
- Always omit initial punctuation in any language (e.g., quotation
marks, ¿). Also, replace other punctuation with a space.
(Exception: drop apostrophes and close up the space.) See
examples, above.
- If searching the full title does not produce satisfactory results,
enter only the first few words of the title.
- critic (for Critic; an illustrated
monthly review... )
- mr potato (for Mr. Potato Head (Comic
strip))
- new directions in ed (for New directions
in education)
- history of the ussr (for History of
the USSR, new research)
- Consider alternate forms of title words:
- initials, acronyms, abbreviations (e.g., us or united
states)
- numbers (e.g., 10 or ten)
- one word or two (e.g., healthcare or health care)
- spelling variations (e.g., color or colour)
- similar concepts (e.g., british or english)
- word variations (e.g., email or e-mail)
- Searches are automatically truncated and retrieve catalog records
that begin with the words or phrases you enter. Do not use the
question mark (?) for truncation.
NOTE: Works entered under an author’s or a creator’s
name (Jane Austen; Giuseppe Verdi) are generally not searchable
via the Series/Uniform Title Browse search. Search
for these works using the Author/Creator Browse search
or Title search.
CAUTION: The Series/Uniform Title Browse Search
retrieves only series whose individual titles have been cataloged
separately. For many series, the individual titles are not cataloged
separately, but the series can be found under its collective title
using a Title Search.
Example: Essays in public policy
Prior to no. 109, the individual titles within this series were
cataloged separately, and these earlier titles can be found using
the Series/Uniform Title Browse Search. However,
this search will not find the catalog record for the collective
title, from which there is a link to the full, electronic texts
of the more recent individual titles. To find the collective title
for this series, use the Title Search.
Alternative Search Options:
When the exact title word order is not known, try either
a Command Keyword or a Guided
Search using the words of the title you do know with Boolean
operators (e.g., yearbook AND anthropology). |
