Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs Cultural Ambassador Daniel Libeskind Moves and Motivates Students of Architecture in Mumbai, India The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Consulate General in Mumbai, India hosted Cultural Ambassador Daniel Libeskind on October 14 and 15, 2004. Libeskind is the first-ever cultural ambassador to visit India and the first cultural ambassador for architecture. He delivered two lectures at the Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute for Architecture and Environmental Studies, and Rachana Sansad’s Academy of Architecture. He also visited the Urban Design Research Center, an NGO dedicated to urban planning and heritage conservation, for an informal discussion with young architects. The audience consisted of more than 1,000 architecture faculty and students from various architectural schools and professional architects. Consul General Angus Simmons hosted a rep dinner, which was attended by Mumbai's top architects. One program was covered in the October 15, 2004 Mumbai edition of “The Times of India." Libeskind's moving account of how his experiences as an immigrant to the U.S. contributed to his design for the Ground Zero site brought the crowds to their feet in standing ovations. The lectures also brought to the fore the contribution of architects as representative of American culture and their continuing importance in the current era.
