Supporting Our Troops: Background

As Operation Iraqi Freedom continues, I encourage you to take a moment to remember the sacrifice of those men and women who have answered the call of the nation to free the people of Iraq and rid the world of weapons of mass destruction that threaten us all.

Many of our employees have asked how they might show support for these brave members of the U.S. military. Therefore, as I announced on March 31 at the Support the Troops rally in Washington, the Interior Department has adopted the Army's 101st Airborne Division "The Screamin' Eagles" and the 10th Mountain Division as our military units for volunteer activities.

Over the days and weeks ahead, we will be unveiling an array of activities that you can participate in to help the troops and their families. The Defense Department has asked us not to send care packages directly to service men and women at this time. However, we are aware of three funds that have been established to assist the families of our troops.

If you wish to contribute to any of these funds, they accept checks and money orders, and their addresses are listed below.

Operation Eagle's Nest is a fund established by the local Chamber of Commerce for the 101st "Screamin' Eagles" to assist the deployed soldiers' families with emergency needs and unexpected repairs. Officials from the 101st have told us that any funds raised will go directly to these families in need.

Operation Helping Hand is a fund established by the Installation Chaplain's Office at Fort Campbell and assists family members with emergency food needs and baby supplies. Assistance includes Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets and a variety of other last-minute needs.
