Travel Guide for the Smart Traveler

Sunset Travel The Department of the Interior has responsibility for lands and people across this vast Nation of ours and island territories beyond. The distances are huge as we manage over 500 million acres of land and other resources and honor our trust responsibilities. And to do this work, as a Department, we spend over $150 million on travel each year.

As Federal employees, we travel under the Federal Travel Regulations and Departmental policies. The Department will reimburse travelers for the cost of accommodations and services, which meet reasonable and customary standards for convenience, safety and comfort in accord with the Federal Travel Regulations.

At the same time, we have choices as to the flights we take, the hotels we choose, and the local transportation we use. This is where you can help better manage the Department’s financial resources. You have opportunities to reduce your own travel costs by using smart travel practices. Dollars saved on travel go into the programs of the Department.

Four ways you can save the Department money when you travel:

AirplaneUse electronic tickets (e-tickets) when available.
luggage Avoid excess baggage! You must pay in most circumstances.
Public Transportation Avoid using a rental car when you can; use public transportation.
Car Rental If you must rent, use a compact car and carpool with other travelers.
