President Bush and Interior Secretary
Gale Norton are committed to caring for our National Parks and
protecting them for the enjoyment of Americans now and into
the future. Tremendous headway has been made in addressing the
Park's deferred maintenance backlog. Since 2002, some $2.9 billion
has been provided to address the backlog. Overall, the President
has proposed more than $760 million annually over five years
to address the backlog.

Approximately 900 repair and rehabilitation
projects were begun in America's parks in 2001/2002. Another
500 projects are being tackled in 2003. Park Rangers are also
playing an increasing role in ensuring a safe visit in National
Parks. The Department of Interior through the National Park
Service is working hard to restore facilities, improve landscape
health, enhance visitor opportunities, and inspire volunteers
to join in preserving these wonderful places.
