Research Project: Ecology, Epidemiology, and Control of Salmonella and Other Human Enteropathogens in Poultry

Location: Poultry Microbiological Safety Research

Project Number: 6612-32000-033-00
Project Type: Appropriated

Start Date: May 01, 2001
End Date: Apr 30, 2006

Objective:
Identify & develop molecular, genetic typing tools to effectively follow salmonellae and other pathogens through production and processing; add to epidemiology database; design & implement intervention strategies at multiple sites in the broiler industry; draft GPP guidelines & work with poultry industry to implement; Conduct follow-up edpidemiology studies to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions strategies.

Approach:
Target genes will be selected and a MLST assay will be developed and analyzed; the relative contribution of the parent breeder stock compared to the grow-out environment on the numbers and specific types of salmonellae and C. perfringens on the final processed chickens will be determined; A multi-faceted on-farm intervention study will be conducted; A follow-up epidemiology study to eveluate the effectiveness of intervention strategies will be conducted.
