Research Project: Improving Aquaculture in the Mid Atlantic Highlands

Location: Cool and Cold Water Aquaculture Research

Project Number: 1930-32630-001-00
Project Type: Appropriated

Start Date: Jan 22, 2001
End Date: Apr 30, 2005

Objective:
1. To investigate and resolve the most common and economically destructive obstacles to profitability for aquaculture producers. 2. To identify opportunities and resolve barriers in technology and resources that will promote expansion of large scale land based aquaculture production systems. 3. To create a new model for the role of a producer's cooperative in providing a range of services needed to grow a strong regional aquaculture industry.

Approach:
Objective 1 investigate the combination of factors that lead to BGD outbreaks on the rainbow trout farm, follow BGD outbreaks prospectively on a selected group of rainbow trout farms and in controlled laboratory experiments, develop and test approaches to the control of BGD that involve changing environmental conditions on the farm. Objective 2 identify the opportunities and barriers to significant large scale culture of high value species in land based systems through evaluation of the quality, quantity and availability of naturally occurring brines in the mid-Atlantic highlands for potential use in aquaculture, establish specific technical and economic feasibility criteria for land based system success. Objective 3 examine the opportunity for Arctic Char as a high value product appropriate for regional production, develop a new model for delivery of stakeholder support services.
