Objective:
To improve the production efficiency of cool and cold water aquaculture species research will be conducted in three fundamental areas of intensive production system development. Problems of physical scale, design and economic viability will be investigated. Effluent treatment will be studied to develop cost effective methods to minimize waste reduction, conserve water and concentrate wastes. Stock health will be addressed by identifying risk factors associated with Bacterial gill disease (BGD).
Approach:
One tenth commercial scale research production facility capable of producing 50 MTON will be evaluated using actic char. Various components of the system will be modified and tested, and new approaches will be evaluated to optimize the performance parameters and maximize product quantity and quality. Wastes generated by the fish in the system will be collected and various approaches for removal of nutrients from the water and for thickening of the solids generated will be tested to define their effectiveness in yielding water of high quality. Management approaches to prevention and control of BGD will be developed by evaluation of outbreaks on U.S. rainbow trout farms and analyzing a number of risk factors involved. In addition, the etiology will be defined by use of laboratory challenges with the most likely causative bacterium.
