Research Project:
IMPROVING AQUACULTURE IN THE MID ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS
Location:
Cool and Cold Water Aquaculture Research
Project Number: 1930-32630-001-01
Project Type:
Grant
Start Date: Sep 01, 2001
End Date: Aug 31, 2006
Objective:
The overall goal of this project is to identify and resolve constraints to expanded aquaculture production in the Mid-Atlantic Highlands region of the U.S. Specific objectives are (1) to identify the constraints and needs of the aquaculture industry and to develop a prioritized list of recommended follow-up research, education, and outreach needs, and (2) to develop solutions for the prevention and control of a serious disease problem impacting aquaculture production in this region.
Approach:
Objective 1 Subsequent to review and analysis of information concerning constraints, barriers, and needs for successful aquaculture industry development, a series of workshops will be convened to garner information regarding current problems, concerns and needs in the Mid-Atlantic region. Participants will include regional and national stakeholders and scientists with aquaculture experience and expertise. Based on this, a prioritized list of the research, education and outreach needs will be developed to guide future efforts for expanding the aquaculture industry in this region. Objective 2 An epidemiological investigation to identify the "risk factors"that lead to BGD outbreaks will be conducted by prospectively following these on a selected group of small farms and in controlled laboratory experiments. Approaches to the control of BGD will be developed and tested that involve the environmental conditions on the farm. Recommendations for management changes will be formulated and transmitted to the farms.
