Research Project: EVALUATION OF GENOTYPE BY ENVIRONMENT INTERACTIONS IN RAINBOW TROUT

Location: Cool and Cold Water Aquaculture Research

Project Number: 1930-31000-003-06
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Sep 05, 2003
End Date: Sep 04, 2005

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to: (1) Determine the performance of family groups of rainbow trout being developed at NCCCWA in typical North Carolina culture conditions for economically important traits (growth, disease resistance), (2) Evaluate the performance of these same genotypes in diverse environments including water recirculation systems (Freshwater Institute), and culture systems in Idaho (Hagerman) and West Virginia (NCCCWA).

Approach:
The evaluation effort will focus on rainbow trout families developed at the National Center for Cool and Cold Water Aquaculture (NCCCWA) and grown in several different environments. The environments being considered are the North Carolina State University facilities, NCCCWA facilities, Freshwater Institute facilities and University of Idaho Hagerman facility. Individuals from approximately 40 full-sib families will be grown in each of these environments and the effects of genotype, environment and the genotype by environment interactions will be quantified in terms of the percentage of the total variation attributable to each effect (or combination).
