Research Project: Development of Plant-Based Trout Feeds Using a Nutrabiotic Approach to Supplement Ingredients Derived from Non-Traditional Crops

Location: Small Grains and Potato Germplasm Research

Project Number: 5366-21310-002-05
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Sep 22, 2004
End Date: Aug 31, 2009

Objective:
The objective of this research is to develop and test plant-based trout feeds using non-traditional ingredients that reduce or eliminate the use of fish meal and fish oil, while maintaining superior fish performance.

Approach:
Potential alternate ingredients will be selected based upon nutrient and anti-nutrient profiles. Emphasis will be placed upon crops that will provide diversification to grain farmers. Complete feeds utilizing new crops will be formulated and evaluated using standard growth and digestibility trials. All feeds will be produced using cooking extrusion. Formulas will be designed to include the highest level of the new ingredients that support superior fish growth at a reasonable cost. Studies will also be conducted to isolate specific strains of native bacteria from the intestinal tract of rainbow trout. These strains will be selected for specific nutrient production to complement the nutrient profile of the plant-based feed. Methods to encourage reestablishment of the selected bacteria will be developed and evaluated.
