Research Project: Breeding Pierce's Disease Resistant Raisin Grapes

Location: Crop Diseases, Pests and Genetics

Project Number: 5302-21220-004-03
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: May 01, 2001
End Date: Jul 31, 2004

Objective:
Develop Pierce's Disease resistant raisin grapes by crossing currently available forms of resistance with large berried and seedless Vitis vinifera raisin grapes.

Approach:
1) Backcross hybrids of [(V. rupestris x M. rotundifolia) x V. vinifera seedless raisin grapes] that have been selected for Pierce's Disease (PD) resistance to high quality V. vinifera seedless raisin grapes; 2) Hybridize bunch grapes from the southeastern US that have PD resistance as shown by greenhouse tests with high quality V. vinifera seedless raisin grapes; 3) Seedlings will be propagated to conduct greenhouse screening for PD and field evaluation of fruit characteristics simultaneously; 4) Backcrossing to high quality fruit and selecting for PD resistance will continue until commercial quality grapes with PD resistance are obtained. Documents Trust with CA Raisin Marketing Board. Log 20197.Formerly 5302-21220-003-03T (10/03).
