Research Project: Micronutrient Enhancement of Maize in Nigeria: a Sustainable Approach to Hidden Hunger

Location: U.S. Plant, Soil and Nutrition Research

Project Number: 1907-42520-003-04
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Oct 01, 2000
End Date: May 31, 2004

Objective:
To evaluate and rank iron bioavailability of numerous genotypes of maize from West Africa. To train technical and lead scientist personnel from cooperating institution in the in vitro assessment of iron bioavailability and carotenoid analysis.

Approach:
Over 60 genotypes of corn have been selected for screening. Initial studies will focus on ranking select varieties in terms of iron content and bioavailability. Once promising lines have been identified, additional bioavailability trials will be planned and conducted as funds allow. Using traditional breeding methods, ARS scientists will continue to work with plant breeders from cooperating institution to further develop the select varieties for nutrient enhancement.
