Research Project: Apparent Digestibility and Nutritional Value of Component of Alaska Seafood Waste Stream to Trout

Location: Subarctic Agricultural Research Unit

Project Number: 5341-31410-002-03
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: May 31, 2002
End Date: Sep 30, 2004

Objective:
Determine nutritional value of seafood waste components as fish feed ingredients in feeding trials using rainbow trout. Determine in vivo apparent digestibility coefficients, for dry matter, organic matter, protein, energy, amino acids, and minerals in seafood waste components using rainbow trout. Determine palatability of seafood waste components when included at appropriate levels in feeds for rainbow trout.

Approach:
Digestibility of seafood waste products will be examined by stripping over a two-week period for digestibility determinations. Seafood waste products will be examined in feeding trials utilizing practical fish feeds. Fingerling rainbow trout in the feeding and palatability trial will be evaluated for 12 weeks, and fish growth rates and feed conversion ratios will be calculated. Samples will be collected for proximate and chemical analysis at the start from the common pool of fish. Documents SCA with University of Idaho.
