Research Project:
Formulation and Testing Safer Pesticides for Control of Fruit Flies
Location:
Crop Quality and Fruit Insects Research
Project Number: 6204-43000-013-04
Project Type:
Trust
Start Date: Jan 15, 2001
End Date: Sep 30, 2004
Objective:
This research is proposed to develop and test formulations to control or eradicate the Mediterranean fruit fly and at least 5 species of Anastrepha fruit flies from coffee and tropical fruit production regions in tropical and subtropical regions of the new world. Goals will be to develop baits and bait stations using locally available attractants and feeding stimulants and insecticides that are registered or can be easily registered.
Approach:
Baits will be developed using hydrolyzed proteins, sugars and other food products provided by Agro Dye Corporation. Baits will be compared to standard attractants currently registered for use in the U.S. Insecticide research will focus on photoactive dyes, bacterial compounds, growth regulators and other products that are registered or can be registered as minimally toxic to vertebrates and whose toxicity is mainly through ingestion by the target insect. Field trials will be carried out in U.S. orchards by releasing and treating sterile flies for chemicals already registered in the U.S. and against native populations in Central American countries after Agro Dye has gained approval for tests. Results will provide a database of new baits and insecticides for use against these pests.
