Research Project: DEVELOPMENT OF PROMISING NEW ROOTSTOCKS AND SCIONS FOR FLORIDA CITRUS

Location: Horticulture and Breeding Research

Project Number: 6618-21000-012-01
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Jul 01, 2002
End Date: Sep 30, 2005

Objective:
Accomplish genetic change of citrus germplasm to develop rootstocks and scions having enhanced tolerance of environmental stress resistance to diseases and pest, improved yield and fruit quality.

Approach:
Identify and develop genetic sources of germplasm and combine desirable traits trhough hybridization. Development techniques to overcome genetic barriers and seek solutions for enhancing tree health and logevity, fruit yield, quality, and appearance. Develop new rootstocs and scions, select and evaluate under various climatic and cultural conditions for tolerance to flood, drought, cold, soil salinity, soil alkalinity; resistance to viruses, root rots, weevils, nematodes, blights; apomictic reproduction, graft compatibility, tree size control.
