Research Project: Development of Improved Synthetic Attractants for Mexflies and West Indian Fruit Fly

Location: Subtropical Horticulture Research

Project Number: 6631-22000-003-01
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Nov 01, 2003
End Date: Oct 31, 2005

Objective:
We propose to develop synthetic lures based on known fruit fly food, including protein baits and host fruits.

Approach:
Evaluation of modifications to ammonium acetate/putrescine formulations for fruit fly attraction. Comparisons among ammonia source as well as ammonium dose or release rates. Optimal ammonia-based lures will be tested with attractant chemicals identified from protein baits and host fruit. Field tests will be conducted in areas with wild Mexfly and/or A. obliqua populations to ensure developed systems are effective and provide California efficacious detection of introductions.
