Research Project: BREEDING OF A RED FLESH MANDARIN

Location: Processed Foods Research

Project Number: 5325-41430-008-04
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Nov 01, 2004
End Date: Oct 31, 2005

Objective:
To provide breeders with tools for the early selection of seedlings with deep orange peel and flesh color, provide an understanding of the genetic control of flesh and peel color, and identify candidate genes for the modification of existing cultivars using transformation.

Approach:
We propose to isolate and sequence genes involved in the synthesis and accumulation of carotenoids and xanthophylls in the flesh and peel of citrus fruit. We will use the sequence information to develop gene specific markers for each of the nine genes. The association of the candidate genes with carotenoid accumulation will be investigated by quantitative trait locus mapping, linkage disequilibrium analysis and sequence comparison.
