Research Project: Revision of the World Species of Coptarsia (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae)

Location: Systematic Entomology

Project Number: 1275-22000-225-01
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Oct 01, 2000
End Date: Sep 30, 2005

Objective:
To develop identification aids, identify all the life stages, and provide a new classification based on morphological and molecular data for moths in the genus Copitarsia. These moths are frequently encountered in imported vegetables and are a serious quarantine issue for growers and APHIS.

Approach:
Taxonomic studies will be carried out using the National Collection of Insects along with newly collected specimens from Central and South America. A morphological study of external characters will be complimented by data obtained by DNA sequence studies to better delimit species and provide the tools needed for APHIS and field workers to detemine when and what species of Copitarsia is present in commodities.
