Research Project: Application of Ozone under Vacuum As a Treatment Against Quarantine Pests on Exported Commodities

Location: Commodity Protection and Quality

Project Number: 5302-43000-030-04
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: May 01, 2001
End Date: Sep 30, 2005

Objective:
1. Determine toxicity of ozone under vacuum to stored-product & quarantine insect pests present in posharvest horticultural commodities. 2. Determine phytotoxic effects of ozone under vacuum to postharvest commodities exported to foreign countries. 3. Establish schedules for effective treatment of postharvest commodities to eliminate stored-product or quarantine insect pests.

Approach:
1. Insects will be treated with ozone under vacuum to determine each species most tolerant stage. 2. Commodities that are attacked in postharvest storage or shipment by insects will be tested to determine if and what phytotoxic effects ozone causes following treatment. 3. From data collected in 1 and 2 above schedules will be developed and tested in confirmatory tests to validate their effectiveness. Documents CRADA with Cosmed. Log 20314.
