Research Project: Morphometrics of Sibling Species in the Aphelinus Varipes Complex

Location: Beneficial Insects Introduction Research

Project Number: 1926-22000-013-07
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Feb 01, 2003
End Date: Jan 31, 2005

Objective:
Characterize differences in shapes of antennal, wing and mesosomal (thoracic) features among sibling species in the Aphelinus varipes complex.

Approach:
(a) Specimens from pure cultures will be individually slide-mounted; (b) Size and shape of individual wings, antennae and mesosomae of slide-mounted specimens will be characterized by recording locations of landmark locations using video microscopy; (c) size and shape differences between cryptic species will be analyzed using methods of distance-based and geometric morphometrics.
