Research Project:
Systematics of Mites, Scales, Aphids, Thrips, Termites & Whiteflies of Agricultural Importance
Location:
Systematic Entomology
Project Number: 1275-22000-228-00
Project Type:
Appropriated
Start Date: Oct 01, 2004
End Date: Oct 31, 2005
Objective:
Develop and deliver improved classifications, identification tools and identifications of mites, sternorrhynchus hemiptera, thrips, termites and crickets and their allies and to improve and maintain the National Collection of Insects. Revise eriophyid genera; conduct systematic revision of genera of flat mites; complete book on economic armored scales of the U.S.; complete guide to N.A. termites; complete database on scales; analyze molecular variations; develop key to thrips; provide identifications.
Approach:
A mix of both traditional morphological studies and cutting edge molecular and computerized methods will be employed. The most cost effective method of capturing and analyzing character information for phylogenetic and revisionary studies remains examination and scoring of morphological character states among target taxa. Integral to completion is acquisition and study of specimens. Another component of modern systematics research is illustrations. A combination of traditional pen and ink drawings facilitated by camera lucida attached to dissecting or compound microscopes along with state of the art digital scanning electron micrography, digital photography and digital imaging software will also be used. The project will also make use of molecular data. Identification aids to allow users ability to identify one named organism from among a set is also an important part.
