Research Project: Evaluation of the Chickpea Core Collection for Drought Tolerance

Location: Plant Germplasm Introduction and Testing

Project Number: 5348-21000-020-01
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Sep 17, 2002
End Date: Dec 31, 2004

Objective:
The objective of this study is to evaluate the core NPGS chickpea collection for drought tolerance. Promising accessions will be used in future breeding programs in Colorado and elsewhere.

Approach:
The chickpea core collection at the Western Regional Plant Introduction Station will be evaluated over a two year period (2002 and 2003) using a line-source irrigation experiment, as described by Hanks et al. (1976). Half of the accessions (253) will be evaluated in 2002 and the other half (252) in 2003. Chickpea germplasm will be evaluated for: - Drought tolerance (DTOL): 1: Susceptible ... 5: Tolerant. - Days to first bloom (BLOOMDAY): Day of the year when flowering begins. - Days to flower (DAYSFLOWER): Actual number of days from seed sowing to first flower. - Pod maturity (PDMAT): Number of days to 80% of the pods at harvestable maturity.
