Research Project: Validation of a White Mold Forecasting System for Dry Beans and Canola in North Dakota and Minnesota

Location: Sunflower Research

Project Number: 5442-21220-010-20
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Jun 01, 2003
End Date: May 31, 2006

Objective:
1) Validate a dry bean growth model necessary to adapt a canola risk map for use on this commodity; 2) adapt the forecasting system to dry bean production systems in North Dakota and western Minnesota; 3) study the relationship between different levels of white mold incidence and severity on yield and yield components in dry beans; and 4) validate the canola risk map as a forecasting system and as a decision making tool for chemical control of Sclerotinia stem rot on canola.

Approach:
Risk maps will identify risk areas of epidemic development throughout the growing season. Field experiments and observations will provide `ground truth' to validate these predictions and make necessary adjustments to the growth model and forecasting system. Field experiments will help to model the relationship between white mold and yield in dry beans and will provide information on the feasibility of using the risk maps as decision tools for chemical control in canola.
