Research Project: Development and Analysis of Geographical Data Basedefining Organic Agroecosystems

Location: Sustainable Agricultural Systems

Project Number: 1265-21660-002-01
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Sep 01, 1999
End Date: Aug 31, 2004

Objective:
To determine the relationships across space and time of soil quality parameters, weed populations and crop productivity in organic production systems. This information will support a research program designed to improve organic crop production and to understand the processes defining organic agrecosystems.

Approach:
Research will be conducted on organic farms and on long-term cropping systems experiments at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center. Data defining various measures of soil quality, weed populations and crop productivity will be collected on a geographically referenced spatial grid at regular intervals in time. A geographic information data-base will be established and analyzed for spatial correlations and changing relationships over time. Hypotheses will be developed to define important processes that influence the dynamics of organic systems.
