Research Project: Importation and Host Range Testing of Parasitoids That Attack the Olive Fruit Fly, Bactrocera Oleae

Location: European Biocontrol Research

Project Number: 212-22000-019-04
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Jan 01, 2003
End Date: Mar 30, 2005

Objective:
Conduct foreign exploration for natural enemies of the Olive Fruit Fly from a variety of areas.

Approach:
1. Search for, collect, import, rear, and identify natural enemies that attack olive fruit fly (OLFF) in its likely regions of origin in Africa and/or southwest Asia. 2. Under quarantine conditions, (a) establish laboratory colonies of these new natural enemies and document their mating and oviposition behaviors and bionomics when utilizing OLFF as a host, and (b) utilize both choice and no-choice tests to determine the actual and potential host range of the new parasitoids, using invasive pest, endemic non-target and beneficial fruit flies. 3. Using several parasitoids already being reared in Hawaii on other tephritid pests, evaluate host acceptance, host suitability and efficacy against OLFF.
