Research Project: Development of Biologically Based Mechanisms of Control of Insect Pests of Fruit, Vegetable and Field Crops

Location: Insect Behavior and Biocontrol Research Unit

Project Number: 6615-22000-020-00
Project Type: Appropriated

Start Date: Jun 26, 2003
End Date: Aug 31, 2005

Objective:
Rearing & behavioral research on parasitoids & predators of insect pests on vegetable crops including tomato & crucifers, grapes & small fruits, tree fruits such as peaches, nectarines, oriental persimmon & pecans; expand field of expertise in Center faculty to include research on biological control of insect pests of grapes & other small fruits; provide enhanced training for graduate and undergraduate students, including more experiential learning; field research toward implementation of IPM programs for insect pests.

Approach:
Research will focus on the development of knowledge on behavior, rearing, and population dynamics of field populations of natural enemies of pest insects. The research will involve: 1) investigating the bahavioral basis of host acceptance and host finding; 2) development of effective means of rearing beneficial insects; and 3) optimization of methods to release and maintain parasites and predators in the field as part of a comprehensive program of IPM. Tests will be carried out in the laboratory, in small field cages, and in field settings as appropriate to verify observations on behavior and rearing of the beneficial insects and to validate methodologies that might be used to control insect pests.
