Research Project: COMPARATIVE PLANT GENOMICS

Location: U.S. Plant, Soil and Nutrition Research

Project Number: 1907-21000-014-00
Project Type: Appropriated

Start Date: Aug 24, 2003
End Date: Jul 31, 2005

Objective:
This research will use plant genomic and genetic resources to evaluate conserved evolutionary structures using model plant genomes and cereal genomes, for the purpose of identify functionally relevant structures in agronomically important cereals such as maize, sorghum and wheat.

Approach:
Bioinformatic and molecular approaches will be used to identify conserved structures. Comparative sequence analysis and anchoring of sequence features to genetic and physical maps will be used to position physical structures, molecular function and phenotypes. Key to this process will be the development of bioinformatic solutions to relate genomic, genetic and phenotype datasets between agronomically and model plant datasets.
