Research Project: Acquisition, Conservation, and Distribution of Wild Species and Genetic Stocks of Tomato

Location: Plant Genetic Resources Unit

Project Number: 1907-21000-016-05
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Sep 25, 2003
End Date: Sep 24, 2008

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to acquire, maintain, evaluate, document, and distribute related wild species and genetic stocks of tomato through the C.M. Rick Tomato Genetics Resource Center (TGRC). Acquisition of new stocks will be performed, as needed, to obtain new and useful sources of germplasm. Maintenance activities will include seed germination testing, seed regeneration -- performed as needed, depending on seed supply, viability and demand -- and seed storage. Evaluation will include confirmation of line identity, detection of contamination or other problems, and progeny testing of segregating stocks, such as male-steriles, lethals, and trisomics. Documentation activities will include publication of annual stock lists and dissemination of passport and other information through database and web-based resources. Seed will be distributed to interested researchers on request.

Approach:
The Cooperator will provide the required expertise and facilities, including field, greenhouse, and laboratory resources, to carry out the objectives of this project. New accessions will be acquired through in-house research, collecting trips, and donation from other researchers. Seed increases will be performed using methods appropriate for each accession, so as to optimize seed yield, and preserve genetic identity, purity, and/or diversity. Seed will be stored in a local seed vault, with backup samples deposited in the National Center for Genetic Resources Preservation (NCGRP). The origin and essential characteristics of each accession will be thoroughly documented in a local database and website, with data uploaded or linked to GRIN upon request.
