Research Project: Modulating Phytonutrient Content in Tomatoes Combining Engineered Polyamine Metabolism with Photomorphogenic

Location: Vegetable Laboratory

Project Number: 1275-21000-155-04
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Oct 01, 2003
End Date: Sep 30, 2006

Objective:
The overall objective is to study the molecular mechanism(s) that regulate(s) phytonutrient accumulation in the tomato fruit in order to devise alternative strategies to develop plants/fruits with enhanced levels of these molecules.

Approach:
(1) To combine the ySAMdc transgene and one of the tomato DET1 mutations(i.e. the dg), each represents a different control mechanism. (2) To combine molecular aided classical breeding, a transgenic approach and genomic analyses. This combination encompasses high potential for improving secondary metabolites level in agricultural crops.
