Research Project:
Development of Plant-Based Expression Systems for the Production of Biomedicals
Location:
Molecular Plant Pathology
Project Number: 1275-22000-206-02
Project Type:
Specific C/A
Start Date: Dec 01, 2003
End Date: Nov 30, 2008
Objective:
Develop new strategies and expression systems in plants using plant viruses as delivery vehicles and transgenic plants for expression of foreign proteins. Develop plant virus-based vectors for presentation of antigenic determinants for production of biomedicals in plants. Develop new technologies and products for prevention, treatment, and control of various diseases in humans and animals. Evaluate efficacy of biomedicals in humans and animals.
Approach:
Development of plant virus-based vectors for fruit and vegetable crops, including a plant rhabdovirus. Identify genetic elements from viruses, viroids, plant genes and proteins that can be used to target and enhance the delivery and expression of foreign gene sequences and proteins. Develop epitope display strategies in a wide-host range plant virus-based vector for candidate animal vaccines. Develop in plants and test new technologies and products to control diseases of human and animals, including anti-rabies plantibodies, human colorectal cancer plantibodies, anthrax antibodies, a plant-derived Tat and gp120-derivative vaccines against HIV-1, plant-derived oral vaccines for anthrax, SARS virus and smallpox.
