Research Project: A Consortium for Site Specific Resource Management

Location: Crop and Entomology Research

Project Number: 5447-21220-001-02
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Feb 01, 2000
End Date: Jan 31, 2004

Objective:
Develop protocols for collecting, analyzing and disseminating spatial data. The research objective will be to develop a management zone approach to sampling of corn rootworms based on correlation of corn rootworm varability with crop, biological, landscape, and edaphic factors. Spatial data will be obtained for correlation to pest, agronomic and nutrient variability in fields of about 65 ha.

Approach:
Existing grid-sampled data for corn rootworm spatial distribution, soil properties (specifically EM-38 conductivity), and nutrient levels will be used to identify and characterize potential management zones for targeted sampline based on landscape position. These studies will be done on existing well-characterized fields of farmer cooperators involved in site specific agricultural research with South Dakota State University. Spatial variability in corn rootworm dispersion will be characterized by grid sampling all life stages (egg, larvae and adults).
