Research Project: Development of Starch-Based Food Containers, Building Materials and Other Products

Location: Bioproduct Chemistry and Engineering Research

Project Number: 5325-41000-039-03
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Aug 01, 2002
End Date: Nov 30, 2004

Objective:
To develop technologies for making starch-based biodegradable food containers, wraps and certain other bioproducts made with wheat and other agricultural starches. The focus will be to develop novel technologies beyond the current scope of EarthShell's existing patents and proprietary knowledge.

Approach:
Laboratory scale tests will be condcuted utilizing the EarthShell baking technology to develop formulations for baked products containing primarily wheat starch, and/or corn starches. Food grade biocides will be tested and evaluted for their effect on processing. Experiments will be done to produce prototype bioproducts that are competitive in cost and comparabe in functional properties to commercial products that include food containers and building materials. This aspect of the agreement will be conducted to develop novel foam products using extrusion, products will be made of starch, biopolymers, fillers, or blends of any of these components. Foamed products will initially focus on food containers but may later include building materials such as lightweight concrete. Documents CRADA with Earthshell Corp. Log 22449.
